What is Green Glue?

Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound is a soundproofing material that is used to reduce the transmission of sound between two surfaces, such as walls, floors, or ceilings. It is commonly used in commercial, industrial, and residential applications to reduce noise from traffic, neighbors, or other sources.

The Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound is made of a viscoelastic substance that absorbs sound waves and converts them into small amounts of heat. It is a non-toxic, water-based compound that is easy to apply, and is also environmentally friendly. Since Green Glue is intended to be sandwiched between two sheets of building materials such as drywall, it eliminates the need to remove existing wall and floor materials.

Installing Green Glue is Fast:

• No measuring or troweling.
• Use a standard (28 oz) quart size caulk gun to apply.
• Green Glue dispenses with very little effort.
• Green Glue will not flow off the board during installation.
• Application time is generally <1 minute per tube.
• It is not necessary to have complete coverage to obtain excellent results. (Improve overall STC rating by up to 16 points)

How to Apply Green Glue to Drywall

To apply Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound to drywall, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound
  • Screwdriver/Drill
  • Screws
  • Utility Knife
  • Drywall

Before you begin: you will need to remove any existing wall covering, such as wallpaper or paneling.

Step 1: Use a screwdriver/drill to attach the first layer of drywall to the wall studs, using the proper screws.

Step 2: Next, apply a thin layer of Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound to the surface of a second sheet of drywall using a tube/pail applicator. Make sure the drywall sheet is laying on a flat surface before applying. There are no particular patterns recommended for applying the Compound, but it is recommended to apply across the entire sheet of drywall. (If using 28 Oz. tubes, use 2 tubes per 4′ x 8′ sheet of drywall)

* Leave a 2-3″ border around the edge of the sheet*

Step 3: Once the Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound has been applied, raise the sheet of drywall into position, and press against the wall or ceiling.  Fasten in place using the appropriate screws. The two layers of drywall, separated by the Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound, will form a sandwich-like structure that is effective at reducing sound transmission.

* It is recommended to seal the seams between sheets using drywall mud or a sealant.  Be sure sealants do not protrude outside the plane of the drywall*

Step 4: Finally, finish the wall by applying sealant to the perimeter and around electrical outlets, being sure to seal any cracks where sound may escape.  The area where the drywall meets the floor is a crucial place to add sealant because this spot does not get taped or mudded.

*It may take up to 30 days for sound reduction properties to activate*

*Green Glue Whisper Clips can also be installed for increased isolation*

Conclusion

It is important to note that Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound should only be used as a part of a comprehensive soundproofing strategy. Other measures, such as adding insulation or using sound-absorbing materials, may also be necessary to achieve the desired level of noise reduction.

Overall, Green Glue Nosieproofing Compound is highly effective (improves STC up to 16 points), easy to use (apply in minutes), environmentally friendly (LEED credits and Indoor Air Quality) and safe to use (non-toxic).
